In 2019 I retired from my career early. I had spent nearly 30 years within the teaching and learning sector, starting out as a primary teacher based in the inner-city of Liverpool and quickly moved up to the role of deputy head. From there, I progressed to become one of the youngest head teachers in the city, taking on an array of difficult challenges within a school situated in one of the most socially deprived areas. Here, I started to develop the resilience I carry today, a valuable skill which has enabled me to empower others who find themselves in stressful situations.

I then went onto my second headship within a larger Liverpool primary school, I was there for 11 years, working alongside brilliant teachers and families within a diverse community. My headship enlightened me to believe that building and sustaining positive relationships, inspiring individuals to be equipped with the necessary tools to remain resilient and overcoming obstacles, are all critical ingredients to achieving real success and fulfilment.

Further to this, I was chair of the Liverpool Primary Headteachers’ Association (LPHA), and a founding member and chair of the Liverpool Learning Partnership, representing primary head teachers on the executive board.

Like many leaders, I was juggling a busy work life, neglecting my personal wellbeing whilst focusing my energy on the needs of others and not stopping to take care of myself.

Something had to give and for me it appeared in a breast cancer diagnosis in 2018 which brought a premature end to my headship and a career I so loved. Having had time to reflect, I fully believe a contributing factor to my physical health was allowing the warning signs of stress to go unchecked.

I try to look for the positives in life, even when facing adversity. I recognised that surviving a cancer diagnosis gave me an opportunity to reassess my life; to stop, take a breath and reflect.

I’ve looked back on this experience and turned it into something worthwhile, using the many skills I have developed throughout my career to enable me to coach professionals who may be in a similar situation to my prior self. With each job, comes its own stress. It’s imperative we start putting ourselves first, empowering us to maximise our success, both in our professional lives and personal wellbeing.

Unfortunately, my story is not unique, and our leaders are facing increased challenges as we and those around us put pressure on us to perform. Recognising, and acting upon the signs allows us to reset and function more effectively.
